I think I’ve said before that I don’t date straight from yard. This wasn’t a conscious decision at first. It just so happened that most of my circle were 1st generation Caribbean-Americans so that’s who I went out with. But as time went on, I became aware of behaviors unique to island men that just rubbed me the wrong way. Most of them are summed up in a one of my father’s favorite phrases:

“Me ain’t want no ole food”

Translation: I don’t do leftovers woman, so get in that kitchen and make me something new.

IMHO, Caribbean men are spoiled, sexist, lazy and just too damn old skool for me. The same way my grandfather could walk down the street “swinging he two long arm” while my grandmother struggled with 7 girls behind him, is the same way Caribbean men today can sit on a couch, straight chillin’, while their woman is simultaneously doing laundry, feeding the baby, seasoning chicken and scanning the supermarket circular for sales.

I’ve yet to meet the exception to my rule. That’s why my first question when meeting men is almost always: “Where are you from?” and if the answer isn’t ” Well, my parents are from (insert island here) but I was born here” then we got a problem. You might get a pass if you been here since you were like 2 yrs old but even that’s iffy.

But never say never in this life. I’m always open to having my mind changed. Until then, where are you from?

What do you guys think? Am I being closed minded? Are these stereotypes valid or just generalizations that I need to let go? What are your experiences with island born verses Caribbean-American men? Tell me nuh?!
